The Power of Volunteerism with Carolina Martinez Sanchez

An Interview with Carolina Martinez Sanchez, VER Development and Alumni Relations Volunteer for BAA

How does strengthening your social bonds sound? Or, enriching your community while enhancing your professional and personal skills? Well, I had the marvelous opportunity to speak with Carolina regarding her passion for volunteerism. Carolina volunteers for the BAA Board and it is a paramount activity for her as it fulfills her life in so many ways. Volunteerism ties together so many aspects, such as creating connections, enhancing community, engaging in socializing, and building essential skills.

Carolina is so proud she is a part of the global community of the BAA because it’s tied to a well-known institute, to which she gets to contribute her time and skills, creating unforgettable experiences.

Moreover, she has had various roles with BAA, from beginning with BAA as a volunteer before COVID and offering her guidance in the mentorship program. All of these roles have allowed her to grow, however, she has faced challenges, but they allowed her to think quicker, making the best decisions swiftly. Overall, Carolina enjoys volunteering because she gets to spend time with her friends while meeting magnificent people. So, let’s hear more from Carolina about her valuable contribution to volunteering and her enthusiasm for it.

1. How has your involvement with BAA fueled your passion for volunteerism, and what drives your commitment to giving back to the community?

My involvement with BAA has fueled my passion for volunteerism by providing me with a platform to connect with like-minded individuals who are also dedicated to giving back to the community. I am motivated by the positive change that results from engaging in individual and collective work.

2. Reflecting on your experiences with BAA, could you share a particularly impactful or memorable moment from your volunteer work?

One particularly meaningful activity is the student group funding. This group comprises talented individuals who provide students with opportunities to connect, collaborate, and engage in activities that align with their interests and aspirations. By allocating resources and support for student-led volunteer initiatives, the BAA encourages student groups to play a diverse and important role in campus life, offering students opportunities for personal growth, skill development, social connection, and meaningful engagement with their communities, making a positive impact during their student experience. WIB is one of the student groups BAA has graciously supported!

3. As part of BAA and the wider institutional community, what connections have you found most rewarding through your volunteer efforts?

Through my involvement with BAA and the wider institutional community, I have great respect for the work of fellow volunteers. I also have a special admiration for mentors who inspire and provide guidance and advice to their mentees. Building relationships with like-minded individuals who share a passion for service and making a positive impact has been one of the most fulfilling aspects as a volunteer. These connections have not only enriched my personal life but have also provided me with a strong support system and network of individuals who inspire and motivate me to continue my volunteer work.

4. For individuals interested in getting involved with volunteer work, what avenues or opportunities do you recommend they explore to make a meaningful contribution?

The University is an excellent starting point for volunteering. You can begin by joining associations and eventually progressing to a board position. It's also valuable to find organizations with volunteer programs and local nonprofits that resonate with your interests and values. Many nonprofits depend on volunteers to assist with projects, events, and programs. For example, I volunteered at the Food Bank, where the experience was both fulfilling and impactful.

5. How have your volunteer experiences with BAA contributed to your personal growth, and what valuable lessons have you learned along the way?

Through my involvement with BAA, I have had the opportunity to expand my skill set, gain valuable experience, and develop a deeper understanding of social issues and community needs that have shaped my perspective and approach to volunteering and community service. One of the most important lessons I have learned through my volunteer experiences with BAA is the power of collaboration, teamwork, networking, and mentorship.

6. Balancing volunteer commitments with other aspects of life can be challenging. How do you manage this balance, and what advice would you offer to students navigating similar responsibilities?

Balancing volunteer commitments with other aspects of life can indeed be challenging, but I have found that effective time management and prioritization are key to maintaining this balance. I make sure to create a schedule or calendar that outlines my commitments. For students navigating similar responsibilities, my advice would be to prioritize self-care and set realistic expectations. It is important to recognize your limits and boundaries and choose the activities that you are passionate about. Communicate openly with your volunteer organizations about your commitments and availability and seek support from friends, family, or mentors when needed. Remember to schedule time for rest, relaxation, and activities that bring you joy to maintain a healthy student/work-life balance for overall well-being.

7. Through your involvement with BAA, what skills have you developed or refined that you believe are particularly valuable in both personal and professional contexts?

Through my involvement with BAA, I have developed strong communication and leadership skills by engaging with diverse groups, collaborating towards common goals, and guiding teams to successful outcomes. My participation in the BAA has also enabled me to build strong relationships, offer recommendations in diverse situations, and achieve successful results.

Wow! Thank you so much to Carolina for providing those wonderful insights about volunteering, the benefits it brings, and the skills and community you get out of it. Undoubtedly, you can achieve so much with volunteerism, and it definitely allows you to strive for better!
